LEGENDARY BHARATHANATYAM DANCERS WHO SHAPED THE ART

Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form that originated in the southern part of

India, particularly in Tamil Nadu. It has a rich history and has been shaped by several

legendary dancers who have contributed to its evolution and popularity. Here are some

of the most prominent bharathanatyam dancers who have made significant

contribution to shaping the art :


Rukmini Devi Arundale (1904-1986)


Rukmini Devi was a key figure in popularizing bharathanatyam and elevating its status from a devadasi tradition to respected classical art form. She worked towards removing the stigma associated with it and helped in its revival by incorporating elements from

other dance forms and adapting it to a moral dignified and holistic approach.


Balasaraswati (1918-1984)


Balasaraswati was a celebrated Bharathanatyam dancer known for her profound understanding of the traditional style. She emphasized the abhinaya (expressional) aspect of the dance and was highly regarded for her emotive storytelling through intricate mudras and expressions.


Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai (1869-1964)


Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai is often referred to as the “Father of modern Bharathanatyam”. He is credited with reformatting the dance style by removing excessive sensuality from the performance and introducing more structured techniques and sequences. His efforts played a significant role in restoring Bharathanatyam’s respectability.


Vyjayanthimala (born 1936)

Yamini Krishnamurthy (born 1940)


Yamini Krishnamurthy is known for her powerful and dynamic dance style. She brought her own unique interpretation to Bharatanatyam, incorporating elements of kuchipudi and odyssey into her performances.


Padma Subrahmanyam (born 1943)


Padma Subramaniam is a versatile dancer, choreographer, hands scholar who has made immense contribution to Bharatanatyam. She is known for her innovative approach to choregraphy and her extensive research on the art form’s history and techniques.


Alarmel Valli (born 1957)

Malavika Sarukkai (born 1959)

Leela Samson (born 1951)
