STORIES OF PLACES THAT INFLUENCE BHARATHANATYAM

Bharathanatyam is an Indian classical dance form that has been shaped and influenced by various places and regions in India. Here are some stories of places that have had a significant impact on the development and evolution of Bharathanatyam .


Tanjore (Thanjavur)


Tanjore is often considered the birthplace of Bharathanatyam. The Maratha rulers of Tanjore played a crucial role in the development and patronage of this dance form. The Tanjore Quartet, a group of four brothers, were instrumental in codifying the dance by compiling the “Bharathanatyam Margam,” a structured sequence of items in a Bharathanatyam recital. The Tanjore style of Bharathanatyam is known for its intricate footwork, elegant movements, and emphasis on Abhinaya (expressions).


Chidambaram


Chidambaram is famous for its Nataraja Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva as Nataraja, the cosmic dancer. This temple has played a significant role in the development of Bharathanatyam. As it is believed to be the source of inspiration for many of the dance’s poses and expressions. The temple’s architecture and sculpture depict various Bharathanatyam poses, providing a visual guide for dancers.


Mysore


The Mysore style of Bharathanatyam is known for its unique features, including its graceful movements, precise execution of adavus (basic steps), and emphasis on abhinayam. The Wodeyar dynasty of Mysore was was known for their patronage of the arts, which helped nurture the dance form in this region.


Kanchipuram


Kanchipuram, an ancient city in Tamil Nadu. Is known for its contribution to the development of the Bharathanatyam costumes. The distinctive Kanjeevaram silk sarees, with their rich colours and intricate designs, are a staple of Bharathanatyam attire. The city’s weavers have played a crucial role in creating costumes that enhance the beauty of the dance.


Mellatur


Mellatur is famous for Bhagavata Mela, an annual dance-drama festival that has been celebrated for centuries. This festival is said to have preserved and promoted the traditional repertoire of Bharathanatyam and influenced its narrative aspect. It features stories from Indian mythology and epic tales performed through dance and drama.


Kalakshetra


Founded by Rukmini Devi Arundale in 1936, Kalakshetra is an iconic institution that has played a pivotal role in the revival and propagation of Bharathanatyam as well as other traditional Indian arts. It emphasizes the classical purity of the dance form and has trained numerous dancers who have contributes to its growth worldwide.


These places have not only influenced the development of Bharathanatyam but also continued to be centres of learning and performance for this ancient art form, ensuring its preservation and evolution for future generations.
