Unveiling the Intricacies: Exploring Bharatanatyam and its Interdisciplinary Connections

It is astonishing to know, on how the bharthanatyam dance form, which is considered as an extra-curricular activity has connection to which is considered as mainstream subjects (i.e, physics, biology, maths, language, history, psychology, etc.)

Bharthanatyam, a classical Indian dance form, has a rich history and is deeply rooted in Indian culture and mythology. Its intricate movements, expressions and gestures are used to convey stories and emotions.

When exploring Bharthanatyam in interdisciplinary contexts, you might consider how it intersects with various fields such as physics, psychology, literature, or even technology. For example:

·       Physics : You could explore the physics of dance movements, focusing on topics like momentum, centre of mass, and rotational motion to understand how dancers achieve their graceful movements.

·       Psychology : Bharthanatyam often involves expressive storytelling. You could explore how the emotions portrayed in dance connect with psychological theories of emotion and expression.

·       Literature : Many Bharthanatyam performance are based on classical Indian texts and myths. You could analyse how these stories are interpreted and expressed through dance.

·       Technology : With advancements in motion capture and virtual reality, there’s potential to explore how technology can enhance the learning and performance in Bharthanatyam.

·       Interdisciplinary performance : Collaborations between Bharthanatyam dancers and artists from other disciplines, such as music, theatre, or visual arts, can lead to innovative and engaging performances that blend different forms of expressions.

Are there any specific aspects of interdisciplinary studies you’re interested in exploring within the context of Bharthanatyam ?

In the next few blogs, I will be discussing in detail about each discipline and its relation to Bharthanatyam.
